Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about salt level monitoring and tank sensors.

How does salt level monitoring work?
Sensors installed on your brine tank or silo measure salt levels continuously. Commercial and industrial sensors use cellular connectivity to transmit data to our cloud platform. Residential sensors connect via Wi-Fi. All sensors send alerts when levels are low and can trigger automatic deliveries for commercial customers.
Do you offer a cellular salt tank sensor?
Yes. Both our commercial and industrial sensors use cellular (4G/5G) connectivity—no on-site Wi-Fi or network configuration required. They work anywhere with cell coverage. Our residential SaltCo Home Sensor uses Wi-Fi instead.
What's the difference between commercial and industrial sensors?
Commercial sensors are designed for brine tanks at facilities like hotels, manufacturing plants, car washes, data centers, and office buildings. Industrial sensors are built for bulk salt silos at manufacturing plants—they're solar-powered (no electrical install), more rugged, and weatherproof for harsh outdoor environments.
Does the industrial sensor require Wi-Fi or power?
No. Our industrial sensor is completely solar-powered and uses cellular connectivity. No electrical hookups or Wi-Fi needed—ideal for remote locations, outdoor silos, and facilities without convenient power access.
How accurate is the commercial sensor?
Our commercial sensor is accurate to within 1/8th of an inch. Smart projection algorithms forecast refills based on your facility's actual usage patterns, enabling anomaly detection for unusual consumption.
What is anomaly detection?
Anomaly detection identifies unusual salt usage patterns—both unexpectedly high and low consumption. This flags potential equipment issues, leaks, or operational changes before they become critical. You receive alerts so you can investigate early.
What's the difference between a brine tank level sensor and a salt silo sensor?
A brine tank sensor monitors indoor tanks (typically at facilities like hotels or car washes) and usually runs on AC power with cellular connectivity. A salt silo sensor is built for outdoor bulk salt storage at plants—our industrial sensor is solar-powered, cellular-connected, and built for harsh environments. Both send level data and alerts; the hardware and install differ by application.
How are alerts delivered?
Commercial and industrial customers get alerts via email and our customer portal. You can configure thresholds and who gets notified. Residential SaltCo Home Sensor users get app-based alerts. We do not use SMS for commercial/industrial alerts; the portal and email are the primary channels.
What are the installation requirements? Do I need Wi-Fi?
Commercial and industrial sensors do not require Wi-Fi—they use cellular (4G/5G), so no IT or guest network is needed. The industrial sensor is also solar-powered, so no electrical run is required. The residential SaltCo Home Sensor does require Wi-Fi at the tank location; it connects to your home network seamlessly and runs on AC power with the included power adapter.
Can monitoring trigger automatic delivery for commercial customers?
Yes. With our Jet Powered commercial salt delivery service, low-level alerts trigger automatic delivery scheduling so refills are dispatched before you run out.
How accurate are the sensors, and what affects readings?
Our commercial brine tank sensor is accurate to within 1/8th of an inch. Readings can be affected by salt bridging (salt forming a crust), extreme temperature swings, or physical obstructions. The system uses algorithms to account for normal variation and flags anomalies when usage patterns look unusual.
What about data security and IT involvement?
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections to our cloud platform. Cellular sensors require minimal IT involvement—no firewall changes, no guest Wi-Fi, and no devices on your corporate network. That makes them a good fit for facilities where IT approval for new gear is difficult.
Can I monitor multiple locations?
Yes. Commercial and industrial customers get a multi-site dashboard to view all tanks and silos in one place. You can see usage trends across locations, dig into a specific tank for more information, and see refill history all from a single account.
Will the SaltCo Home Sensor work with my water softener?
Yes. The SaltCo Home Sensor is compatible with all major water softener and brine tank brands. It installs in minutes on any standard brine tank.
Can I reorder salt from the app?
Yes. The SaltCo Home app lets you reorder salt with one tap through our dealer network.
What areas do you serve?
Residential (SaltCo Home Sensor): Nationwide across the United States.

Commercial and Industrial: Currently serving Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Florida. View service areas.
